“As a husband/partner, pending Dad and then as a new Dad, you want to make sure you’re doing as much as you can to support your wife/partner and ensure your precious bundle has the best start. Given the intensity and emotion involved with this period, there are bound to be times when you think you can’t do right from doing wrong -Dad’s beware! Using a Doula can not alone help the birthing process and offer a birth partner but more than that, helps as a sounding board for Mum and Dad, often an intermediary and a sense of pragmatism. Not all Doula’s are pragmatic and if you’re looking for more objective support then probably the role can have a negative stigma if the perception is of “new age,” almost organic approach to birthing and parenthood. Jackie is of the pragmatic sort and this was the reason we chose her, and what a great decision that was.
My wife had had a previous traumatic birth and it was some years ago. She also hates all things medical. Consequently, we needed support for understanding the latest techniques/medicine together with a no nonsense approach to giving advice/support. Jackie’s personality and medical background makes her uniquely place to fulfil this role. She was reassuring during the pre-birth medical procedures, a great intermediary between us and the medical staff if there was anything that was requiring discussion, technically supportive with recovery/breastfeeding/early days matters and morally supporting throughout. Having someone objective and partial only based on both your partner/baby and your own well being means that you’ve got great a great back up team. I’d recommend Jackie wholeheartedly.
