A doula is a compassionate woman, trained and knowledgeable in childbirth, who offers emotional and practical support to the mother and her partner before, during and after birth. Careful preparation can help you start labour in a positive and confident way. As labour progresses some couples appreciate extra support from someone they have come to know and trust.
A doula is not a medical professional and does not perform clinical tasks, diagnose medical conditions or give medical opinions. She will not interfere with medical decisions and advice. She is there to offer unbiased, evidence based information, to support the woman in the decisions she makes and to offer continuous care to both mother and her partner from early labour until after the birth.
As a trained nurse I am very aware of the importance of the interface between the doula and healthcare professionals. I am comfortable working in a clinical environment and fully understand where the boundaries lie between the role and responsibilities of the doula and those of the midwives, obstetric team and anaesthetists.
In addition to being a birth and postnatal doula I have a particular interest in breastfeeding. This is the natural way to feed your baby and breast milk is the ideal food. If you decide to formula feed your baby I would of course support you but please read the articles below carefully before making up your mind.
